Beith StreetStudents move into Partick development

Partick’s latest student housing development has opened its doors to tenants following completion of work on the Falconer Chester Hall designed build.

Built by Downing Students, West Village has 701 apartments including en-suite shared and studio accommodation the block overlooks the River Kelvin on Beith Street and incorporates extensive areas of public realm including a new riverfront walkway.

 



Aberdeen glazier wins UK prize

Aberdeen-based home improvement specialist Thistle Windows and Conservatories is ending 2015 on a high after winning a prestigious industry award.

The firm, celebrating its 20th year, was named Conservatory Installer of the Year at the G15 Awards for UK glass and glazing firms.

Held at the London Hilton Hotel, Mayfair, Thistle impressed the judges amid fierce competition – adding another trophy to the 13 Scottish and eight UK national awards it has collected to date.



The G-Awards is one of the most important dates of the year for the glass and glazing industry, with companies from across the UK competing to be recognised as the best.

The awards are open to every company across the UK industry including installers, manufacturers and suppliers of all specialities.

Judges said Thistle had “demonstrated an exceptional level of customer service and consideration to their clients, with genuinely extremely satisfied customers who felt the company had performed over and above their expectations”.

 



Tulloch Homes takes on eight more apprentices

Eight new apprentices have joined Tulloch Homes as part of the firm’s “grow your own” policy.

The housebuilder, celebrating its 90th birthday this year, now has 22 apprentices – the highest total since before the global financial crisis.

Chief executive George Fraser said: “We’re delighted to further expand our ‘grow your own’ policy and the intention is to make additional apprentice recruitment in the first half of 2016. In addition to the apprentice intake, we have found success with a policy of training and creating new site managers from within our existing ranks.”



 

Dumfries Theatre Royal reopens after major renovations

Scotland’s oldest working theatre is staging its first performance following a major renovation project.

The £2 million overhaul of the Theatre Royal in Dumfries received planning permission a little over two years ago.



Work has been completed in time to allow for pantomime performances of Beauty and the Beast.

The theatre has been extended into neighbouring buildings with a specialised rehearsal area and a more welcoming foyer created.

Enhanced bar and food facilities were also part of the upgrade.

 



Dundee wall collapse residents allowed home

Dundee residents who were forced to move out of their homes two years ago after a wall collapsed have finally been allowed to move back in.

The collapse of the retaining wall in December 2013 caused a landslip next to the flats at 2 Gardner Street.

The block was evacuated after fears the collapse could affect its “structural stability”.



Repairs to the wall have cost almost £777,000. Residents will be allowed back in on 7 December.

 

Peebles wins public vote for Borders whisky distillery site

A public vote has seen Peebles emerge as the preferred location for a whisky distillery project in the Borders.



R&B Distillers launched its “big question” survey earlier this year.

Peebles has been announced as the winner after stacking up more votes than all the other potential sites added together.

The company said that “exactly how and when” its plans would unfold was now being developed.

 

Wind farm extension to create apprenticeships

A number of new apprenticeship positions are to be created at a wind farm extension project in South Lanarkshire, SSE has announced.

Development on the 54-turbine Clyde Extension project is due to last for two years.

Construction work is being undertaken by a joint venture between civil engineers Jones Brothers and Balfour Beatty.

Ten labourers from the surrounding area, as well as a trainee engineer, have already been recruited at the Clyde Extension site, through Jones Bros, with additional plans to recruit local apprentices in the New Year.
