  • Industry builds bridges with local young people setting out on career paths

Six young people from the Highlands have carved their first steps into the world of construction as they completed a three-week immersion into the sector.

The Journey into Construction initiative, led by Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Inverness and Central Highland and a number of industry bodies includes tailor-made professional training and experience for individuals seeking to upskill and secure employment in the sector.

Apprentice plumber Craig Given, who successfully completed the programme last year and has secured work with Tulloch, reflected positively on his experience saying: “The programme really made me certain that this was a career I wanted to pursue. I’d definitely recommend the path that I took, it gives you an idea of what working in the industry is really like before you dive in. It taught me a lot of valuable skills and helped me make the step into the industry.”

The programme sees the budding young builders complete qualifications in Health & Safety and First Aid courses delivered by Safety Training Solutions. Participants then receive an employability skills session before taking their new skills on-site and embarking on two-weeks of work with industry giant Robertson.

Following the completion of the training, all participants are awarded CSCS cards, which provide proof that individuals working on construction sites have the required training and qualifications for the type of work they carry out.

Applicants who achieve APM’s chartered status are included on the Register of Chartered Project Professionals.
