  • Care home plan for former Atrium building in Perth recommended for approval

Perth & Kinross Council’s planners have signed off on proposals for a new 80-bed care home at a former office block in Perth.

The new facility will be built on the site of the former Atrium building on Glover Street, which has lain empty for more than two years.

Developers Simply UK plan to demolish the current building and erect a new three-storey care home in its place.

The new structure will be of a “similar footprint” to the existing one but with an additional wing.

  • Highland school estates set for improvement funding

The Highland Council has agreed to allocate funding from the Scottish Government capital allocation for the Early Learning and Childcare (ELC) expansion programme to make significant improvements to Beauly, Dunvegan and Kiltearn Primary School estates.

Councillors had agreed last month to substantially enhance the outcomes achieved from the ELC investment in these locations by augmenting it with council capital funding. This investment will support council’s challenging programme to deliver the government commitment to expand ELC provision by August 2020 which will include significant additional capacity to ensure the expanded provision is delivered in fit-for-purpose accommodation.

The council will therefore invest in a new build for nursery, kitchen, dining, games hall and ancillary accommodation, along with the demolition of some poor quality buildings for Beauly and Dunvegan. This approach will see the demolition of buildings at each school that are among the poorest in Highland, and where major concerns exist about their condition and fitness for purpose.

The school building at Kiltearn can be extended to provide the additional nursery accommodation required, and partially refurbished to bring it up to at least a “B” rating for both condition and suitability.

A report to council in March 2018, agreeing the capital programme, made clear the need for capital investment was far greater than the funding available. Eleven schools were agreed to be priorities: These include a Tain 3-18 campus; Nairn and Fortrose secondary schools; schools in Invergordon; Beauly, Broadford, Dunvegan and Tarradale primaries; St. Clements school and primaries in Alness and Kiltearn.

  • New lifeboat station planned for Anstruther

A multi-million pound new lifeboat station is in the pipeline for Fife.

Plans have been drawn up that will see the RNLI’s base at Anstruther Harbour move to a brand new purpose-built facility just a few hundred yards east along the shore – freeing up the existing building for alternative uses.

The relocation will also pave the way for the planned upgrade of Anstruther’s all-weather lifeboat to a newer Shannon class vessel, which is the most agile in the RNLI’s fleet and could halve response times.
