Developers pull plug on Dundee build to rent project
Plans for the conversion of a former Dundee college building into build to rent and serviced apartments development have been shelved due to a lack of funding.
VOXCAP Investments (Dundee), part of Whiteburn Projects, gained planning consent last year to create 111 build to rent apartments with car parking and 24 serviced apartments at the former Dundee College on Constitution Road.
Reigart Contracts had been appointed to undertake enabling works to facilitate the redevelopment, entitled VOX Dundee.
Plans penned by Keppie Design also included a new café fronting Constitution Road, a cinema / auditorium, a launderette and an extensive landscaped courtyard.
The developers told Scottish Construction Now that a lack of funding has made the project impossible and the site will now be put up for sale.
A spokesperson for VOXCAP Investments LLP said: “Unfortunately, due to funding reasons, VOXCAP Investments LLP have not found it possible to develop the former Dundee College building on Constitution Road in Dundee as proposed. We have appointed joint selling agents J&E Shepherd and JLL to market the site, and until the site is sold, our 24 hour security measures will remain in place to ensure the building and surrounding development area is safe.”
The existing college buildings opened in May 1970 and overlook the city and the Tay estuary. It remained in operation for over 40 years until its closure in 2011.
