Councillors have been asked to approve plans for a new energy-from-waste incinerator in Dundee.

A report set to go before the local authority’s development management committee on Monday is to recommend that the proposed facility, which will produce heat and power by burning rubbish, is given the green light.

The proposals from MVV Environment Services Ltd, which intends to take over the running of the site from the council-owned firm DERL, would see a new facility built next to the existing incinerator at Baldovie.

The report states that the facility would have the capacity to treat 110,000 tonnes of waste a year and would help the both Dundee and Angus council achieve their recycling targets.

As well as rubbish collected from the public, it would also have the ability to process some commercial and industrial waste, which would be given thermal treatment to avoid sending it to landfill.

The development would also include a visitor facility, and provide meeting and educational space for the local community.
