The residential development proposed for the site of the blaze

Eleven fire crews — including two high reach units — tackled the fire on the corner of High Street and George Street which was reported around 1.30am.

The buildings include the Old College Bar and are subject of a major planning application by Structured House (Merchant Point) Ltd for around 240 flats plus ground floor commercial space.

No casualties were reported.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: “We were alerted at 1:27am on Tuesday, May 4, to a report of a derelict building on fire at High St, Glasgow.

“Operations Control immediately mobilised four fire appliances to the scene. Firefighters were met with a well-developed fire and requested further resources to bring the fire under control.

“At its height more than 40 firefighters, seven fire engines and two height appliances were in attendance.

“There are no reported casualties and crews continue to work to extinguish the fire.”

Earlier this year, Structured House Group requested permission to knock down unlisted buildings at 219 to 221 High Street, which includes the Old College Bar, and 223 to 227 High Street. CarsonSall Architects had been brought on board to rework plans initial submitted by ADF in 2019.

An older application, from 2016, to demolish the properties and build student accommodation has also yet to be decided.
