Green light for new 60-bed Dundee care facility

Wellburn HousePlanning permission has been granted for a new 60-bedroom residential care facility in Dundee.

Work on the new facility, to be set in the grounds of Wellburn House on Liff Road, will begin in 2017.

Designed by James F Stephen Architects, the new home will act as an extension of the existing care facility within Wellburn. The plans include a chapel, conference room, lounge areas and a sensory garden.

Wellburn House was run as a care home by The Little Sisters of the Poor nuns, but was threatened with closure last year when they announced they could no longer run the facility and that the home would be put up for sale.

However, the Diocese of Dunkeld stepped in to save the facility — and now wants to modernise the operation with this new home.

Councillor Tom Ferguson said he was delighted to see it gaining approval.

He added: “This decision will be most welcome in Lochee. Wellburn House is an institution in the area.

“To have a modern facility with easy access is going to be a great boost to the area. I am very pleased to see it coming together.”
