Housing plans submitted for former Innerleithen mill

1704 View West to entrance 20170814Whiteburn has submitted a detailed planning application for the redevelopment of the former Caerlee Mill in Innerleithen.

The vision for the site is to build 44 two, three and four bedroom houses and cottage flats which have been designed to reflect the spirit of the former mill site as well as the heritage of the village structure.

The new-build housing will be released for sale on the open market and Whiteburn hopes this will add to the vibrancy of the established Innerleithen community.

In conjunction with the proposed new-build housing, Whiteburn is exploring economically viable solutions for the B- listed Brodie’s Mill building which dates back to 1778, together with the other associated listed buildings retained on the site.

Roger Bainbridge, responsible for design and delivery, who has worked with the design team to create new house designs and the site layout, said: “With our Caerlee Mill project we hope to show that new-build housing can be designed and delivered with consideration for the heritage of the site at the heart of our proposals. Our homes have been designed with an emphasis on natural daylight and modern day comforts and living.

“We have worked with City Architecture Office, Goodson Associates Engineers, Doig and Smith and Scottish Borders Council to create a development which encompasses the best of Design Guidance and Place Making policy. We believe that Caerlee Mill offers an opportunity to live in incredible location in the heart of Innerleithen.

“It is our aim to offer desirable homes where people want to live, in a place where they will be proud to contribute to its future legacy.”

Whiteburn’s project director, Eve McCurrich, added: “Our key objective is to bring this historic site in the heart of the village of Innerleithen back to life and create a great place for people to live.

“We’re at the start of a very exciting process for Caerlee Mill, and we are exploring a range of options for the Mill Buildings. I’d be happy to hear from anyone who has sound ideas for the listed buildings which are retained within the site.

“We’re really keen to engage with the local community and will be attending the Innerleithen Pipe Band Championships on the 9th September to ask public opinion for ideas, my door is open for suggestions that we can consider.”
