Marshall Construction makes it four in a row for Home Bargains stores

Alloa based Marshall Construction has won its fourth contract with TJ Morris Ltd, the company behind the growing Home Bargains retail brand.

The family run construction firm was recently appointed to deliver a 22600 sq foot shell retail unit in Fraserburgh at a cost of £1.7 million.

Marshall Construction, established in 1983, has already completed a £1m store for Home Bargains in Kilsyth and has two other stores currently under construction at Larkhall and Falkirk, valued at £1.8m and £1.4m respectively. All four contracts were won in quick succession by competitive tendering.

Graham McRoberts, senior estimator from Marshall Construction, said: “We are delighted to be strengthening our growing relationship with TJ Morris Ltd and to be playing such a fundamental part in their plans to grow to 700 stores across the UK in the next five years. They are a consistently top rated retailer and a business with which we are very proud to be associated. Four in a row is a fantastic result for us, and further proof that we have the correct blend of experience across the group to implement and deliver this type of work as well as initially price out each contract at a rate which is clearly “bang on the money” for clients with a time sensitive expansion plan.”

Mr McRoberts explained that the Home Bargains contracts consisted of removing existing ground to make way for each new substructure, a slab and steel frame, together with steel cladding and roofing. External works at each site included a new car park and associated landscaping, fencing and provision of necessary services.

The retail sector is one of several sectors Marshall Construction, which celebrated its 30th Anniversary last year and also operates the Marshall Homes brand, is active in, with around £14m of other jobs currently in progress, or about to kick off. Public sector work is faring well with a £1.4m contract with Cullross/Hillcrest Housing Association in Edinburgh, an £8m contract starting next year for Perth & Kinross Council (HUB) for Alyth Primary School, a £1.3m contract for Forth Housing Association in Stirling and a £1.4m contract to start next year on nineteen units at Fairfield, Sauchie for Clackmannanshire Council (HUB).

Recently completed are two other projects for Clackmannanshire Council – at the Speirs Centre, Alloa & twenty six units at Hallpark in Alloa.

In the Industrial sector, Marshall Construction has recently completed a £2.2m bonded warehouse for Chivas Brothers at Willowyards in Beith, and work will shortly commence on a £5.8m contract for two further phases of warehouses. In addition to these, in the past 6 years Marshall Construction have completed eight other warehouses at this location, with a contract value in excess of £10m.

Robert Marshall, managing director added: “With our 30th Anniversary behind us, we are looking to the future with renewed confidence. We have been buoyed by recent research stating that Scotland has accounted for nearly a quarter of the total value of new construction contracts awarded in September, particularly in the healthcare sector, in which we work, and in infrastructure. Clearly economic conditions have improved enormously and whilst we are still operating in a challenging and very competitive sector, we know we have an extremely solid client list and the best people with us.”
