Mixed use plans for listed Dundee maritime building



Dundee DP&L buildingPlans have been unveiled to transform an iconic listed building in Dundee into offices and flats.

Morgan McDonnell has submitted proposals to the council for the 100-year-old former DP&L building on East Dock Street which will house ground floor office space with ten flats above.

Edinburgh developers Stone Acre will demolish the internal central chimney and the raising of fourth floor collar beams to provide necessary head room.

A spokesman for Morgan McDonnell said the plans would result in the building becoming part of the wider investment in Dundee’s waterfront.

He said the plan was to demolish an extension to the rear of the building, which would reinstate the footprint of the original listed building.

He added that care would be taken to maintain and respect the initial design of the original listed building.

The spokesman said: “The proposals aim to bring clarity back to an important piece of Dundee’s industrial heritage.

“As the building has been occupied by DP&L and its subsidiaries since 1915, this is a significant moment in the building’s life, presenting an exciting opportunity for rejuvenation.”

He added that to ensure consistency with the aspirations of the local authority, the developers had discussed the design proposals with city planners.

It is hoped that work can be completed by early 2016 if permission is granted.

Facing the Victoria Dock, the original building on the site was constructed for the Dundee and Arbroath railway in 1891.
