Morrison Construction educates next generation about industry
Action for Children works with youth to help them overcome disadvantage, including providing employability support in partnership with local businesses.
The group of 12 young people from East Lothian who visited site are completing the Pave Your Way programme; gaining employment skills and construction industry qualifications before completing a work trial with a potential employer.
After a safety induction on site, the group enjoyed a tour of the site and asking questions about the project and the various tradespeople involved.
Morrison Construction project skills coordinator, Henry Lennon, who accompanied the Pave Your Way group on site, said: “Morrison Construction has a progressive community initiative programme and hosting Action for Children on site as part of the Pave Your Way programme is just one of our many local initiatives being carried out throughout the country.
“The tour was a fantastic opportunity to show young people interested in a career in construction around the site and to speak with experienced tradespeople about the career opportunities that exist in the industry.
“It was a fantastic learning experience for the group to see a live site as they complete this programme to secure employment in the sector. The group were very engaged during the tour and asked lots of questions, which was great to see.”
Roddy Clark, project director for hub South East, said: “As well as delivering high quality community infrastructure, the ethos of the Hub programme is about providing real community benefits and we’re delighted to see this in action on site in Wallyford.
“Our client, East Lothian Council, is keen to ensure that as many local people as possible are benefiting from this significant investment in the area and involving local young people in site visits is just one of the ways in which we are ensuring this happens, alongside work experience, new jobs and apprenticeships.”
The new education facilities will replace the existing school at Salters Road.
