New mixed use plans submitted for Dundee’s City Quay
A planning application has been submitted to Dundee City Council for a mixed-use development of a site located at the heart of the former Victoria and Camperdown docks.
The proposals for the vacant site on the City Quay, currently being used as a car park and site compound, have been put forward by developer Victoria Dock (Dundee) Ltd in partnership with Hillcrest Housing Association.
The organisations have jointly worked up the plans to transform the site for residential and commercial/retail use.
Project architects JM Architects prepared the application with its interpretation of the client brief and the consultees responses have very much shaped proposed scheme. The practice has been very conscious of history of the industrial river’s edge and the powerful modern and traditional urban architecture surrounding the site.
It is hoped that the site will deliver 122 new homes which will range in size. There will be two main buildings, which are six and seven storeys, along with associated parking and amenity space.
If approved, Victoria Dock (Dundee) Limited will deliver the affordable homes for Hillcrest Housing Association over the next two years. It is hoped that works will start on the site in late 2018 with the new homes handed over to Hillcrest by late 2020.
David Zwirlein, Hillcrest Housing Association director of development and new business, said: “This is an exciting project to be involved in as it will transform a vacant site to provide much needed affordable housing in the city. We’re undertaking an ambitious development programme in Dundee and welcome the opportunity to work with our partners on this dynamic project at City Quay. The homes will be delivered over two phases with an anticipated start date later this year.”
A spokesperson for Vitoria Dock (Dundee) Limited added: “We are delighted to have submitted this planning application, it is the culmination of a lot of work by all stakeholders. The project architects, JM Architects, have had to work hard to design something that works for the client whilst also being mindful of the feedback from public drop-in sessions, where locals had their say. At the same time, taking cognisance of feedback from the pre-application discussions with Dundee City Council’s Planning Department.
