Scottish Government commits further funding for Govanhill regeneration

Over the past four years, the South West Govanhill Strategy has been key in acquiring and repairing homes for social rent by Govanhill Housing Association, increasing the supply of affordable housing in the area.

This work will now continue for a further two years thanks to new funding from the Scottish Government, along with £7.89m from Glasgow City Council and £1.5m from the housing association.

Housing minister Kevin Stewart said: “This scheme has been hugely successful, providing the people of Govanhill with high-quality, affordable housing while improving the environment for existing residents.

“I am pleased to be working with Glasgow City Council and Govanhill Housing Association to extend this project for a further two years, and providing the funding to ensure the transformative changes we are seeing will last for generations to come.”

Annie Macfarlane, Govanhill Housing Association chair and local resident, added: “We are delighted that the South West Govanhill project will be funded for another two years. This investment, which is a partnership between the Association, Glasgow City Council and the Scottish Government, will allow us to sustain and consolidate the major improvements which have taken place over the first four years of the programme.

“As someone who has lived in South West Govanhill for the last 28 years, I have seen first-hand the improvements that this project has made to both the fabric of the buildings and the lives of the families living in them.”
