Scottish Government rejects appeal for 150 new Dundee homes

Kirkwood Homes planThe Scottish Government has upheld a decision to reject plans for 150 new homes in the Broughty Ferry area of Dundee.

Kirkwood Homes had applied to build the Balgillo Heights development at Linlathen Village to the East of the city last May.

The proposals offered a mix of three bedroom terraced and three, four and five bedroom detached homes at the development.

A village green space would also have been introduced throughout the site to build and enhance the distinct character and identity of the area.

The plans had been recommended for approval by housing officers subject to conditions but were rejected by councillors in November for failing to “satisfy” the requirements of the city’s development plan.

A planning appeal was then made to the Scottish Government which has upheld the city councillors’ decision.

As well as agreeing with councillors’ assertions that the scheme would not fit with the area’s local development plan, Scottish Government case officer Robert Maslin said the site would impact upon developments at Western Gateway.

He said: “Early development of the Linlathen site is likely to detract from the priority that is given to the Western Gateway and to brownfield sites in the first five-year period of the local development plan.”

Kirkwood Homes said it is still committed to the development.

Colin Crombie, managing director of the company, told the Evening Telegraph: “We are very disappointed by the Scottish Government’s decision to reject planning permission for Linlathen Village in Broughty Ferry.

“Going forward, we are still very much committed to both the development and the area and will continue to work closely with officers at Dundee City Council to ensure our plans are aligned with their aspirations.”
