Mr McGregor, a former chairman of the UK Lighting Board, led the Scottish Government’s Streetlighting Energy Efficiency programme which has to date resulted in savings of £50 million to Scottish local councils and a reduction of 155,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Mr McGregor is now working with several English local authorities to emulate the success of the Scottish programme by assisting councils in developing business cases to secure investment in switching over to energy efficient LED streetlighting.

He said: “I was thrilled to receive this award which is a welcome recognition of what we were able to achieve in Scotland. We have had a lot of interest from English local authorities and I am looking forward to working with them to attain significant savings of up to 60 per cent in annual streetlighting electricity costs as well as the resulting reduction in harmful greenhouse gas emissions.”
