A construction student on an employability course at New College Lanarkshire has secured full-time employment with a leading construction business through a successful industry partnership.

16-year-old Dean Shields from Coatbridge has secured the role of Document Controller in the Bellshill-based engineering office of Advance Construction, a supply chain partner of College partner Morrison Construction, after impressing his employers on a six-week work placement.

Dean undertook the placement as part of his studies on the Construction Engagement course at the College’s Motherwell campus, which boasts strong industry connections including the partnership with Morrison Construction, a leading construction and house building business.

The course provided Dean with the knowledge necessary for a career in construction, employability skills and health and safety training, along with providing the work placement opportunity.

Dean’s existing knowledge and dedication during his work placement impressed staff at Advance Construction so much that they decided to offer him the full-time role following course completion.

He said: “I am delighted to have been offered this opportunity to join the team as a Document Controller.

“My time with Advance Construction has been very enjoyable and I have learnt a lot in a short period of time. I am now looking forward to starting my full time job.

“I wish to thank all the lecturers and staff at New College Lanarkshire for giving me this opportunity to gain a traineeship. I would also like to thank those at Morrison and Advance Construction for all their support in helping me achieve this great opportunity.

Dean’s line manager, Darren Sommer, added: “We are delighted to be involved in the Construction Engagement course at New College Lanarkshire.

“Dean has performed so well during his placement that we are delighted to give him this employment opportunity and hope in the future to be more involved with work placements.”

New College Lanarkshire has maintained a strong industry partnership with Morrison Construction for many years which has seen several students benefit from work placements and employment.

Martyn Campbell, curriculum and quality leader in construction at New College Lanarkshire, said: “On behalf of all at New College Lanarkshire I would like to congratulate Dean on his new role.

“We have worked hard to develop a strong relationship with the business which has been mutually beneficial.

“Dean’s employment has reaffirmed our dedication to our students, developing the skills and attitudes necessary for full-time employment.

“It is with great delight that we could provide this fantastic opportunity to Dean and hope that it will inspire builders of the future to join us at New College Lanarkshire.”
