The need to encourage traditional building skills was highlighted outside the Scottish Parliament this week.

The Scottish Traditional Building Forum delivered a traditional building skills demonstration with MSPs and school pupils receiving mini-masterclasses in stonemasonry, roof slating, decorative plastering and painting & decorating skills with the assistance from apprentices across Scotland.

Pupils from Firhill High School, Glasgow Gaelic School, Braes High School and Inverkeithing High School all took part in the demonstrations across May 28-29.

Activities included:

  • Roof Slating by National Federation of Roofing Contractors
  • Stonemasonry by Edinburgh College and Stone Federation GB
  • Decorative Plastering by City of Glasgow College
  • Painting and Decorating by Dundee & Angus College
  • Infrared Scanning by University of Edinburgh

Gordon Lindhurst MSP (Conservative & Convener of the Economy Committee), Sandra White MSP (SNP) and Elaine Smith MSP (Labour) all sponsored the event, which was attended by other MSPs throughout the two days.

The event was part of Construction Scotland’s Inspiring Construction programme and built on the successes of the programme across Scotland which aims to promote construction as a career of choice.

Pupils get to grips with thermal imaging

Local contractor Rooftec (Scotland) once again represented the National Federation of Roofing Contractors in delivering mini-masterclasses in roof slating. Rooftec has been involved in these events in Falkirk for a number of years including this year’s STEM at The Helix and it will also be representing the NFRC at this year’s Royal Highland Show in June.
