South Lanarkshire Council has agreed to deliver an extension to Glengowan Primary School.

£2.8m extension agreed for South Lanarkshire primary school

The £2.8 million extension will add three classrooms, increasing its capacity by almost 100 pupils. A new nursery will also be part of the two-story extension, with spaces for almost 50 young learners.

This would help the school meet anticipated demand in the Larkhall Community Growth Area (CGA) – one of a number of CGAs being developed by the council as part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal.

Chair of the council’s education resources committee, Councillor Katy Loudon, said: “We know that the Larkhall CGA is proving to be very popular with young families and the school extension, and nursery provision, will enhance the facilities already available.

“I am delighted that we are able to take these proposals forward and we expect the work to be complete by August 2022.

“The school will continue to deliver the very high standards we have developed at all our primary and secondary schools across South Lanarkshire.”

The City Deal funding element of the total project cost is 86% of the project cost (£2.405 million) with the council contributing the 14% balance (£391,000).

The proposals will now be considered by the Glasgow City Region City Deal Programme Management Office who have delegated powers to confirm its approval under the Assurance Framework.

South Lanarkshire Council has already rebuilt or totally refurbished all secondary and primary schools in the area.
