50 new council homes planned at former Irvine school site
North Ayrshire Council’s plans to build the next generation of council homes has continued with an application for 50 homes at the former Towerlands Primary School site in Irvine.
About this development:
- Authority:North Ayrshire
- Type:Residential
- Applications:
- Team:Mast Architects (architect), Ashleigh Building (contractor), hub South West Scotland (development partner)
Once again led by Mast Architects, and delivered by Ashleigh (Scotland) Ltd in partnership with hub South West Scotland, the project will deliver a mix of house types including general needs, wheelchair accessible and amenity housing.
In the design statement, the architects wrote: “Rather than conform to either of the traditional roof forms adopted within the context, the proposed development adopts a new roof form alongside the traditional duo-pitch to create aesthetic interest.
“Elevationally, the pitched roof is accentuated on each plot in a ‘saw-tooth’ pattern, creating a contemporary elevation composition that distinguishes each plot, and which advocates a visually interesting block form.”
The development continues North Ayrshire Council’s plans to build 116 council homes, for which it signed a £19 million agreement with partners hub South West Scotland in February.
The new housing developments include:
- 50 homes at the former Towerlands Primary School site in Irvine
- 34 homes at Brathwic Terrace, Brodick, on Arran
- 18 homes at St Beya Gardens in Millport on the Isle of Cumbrae, and
- 14 homes at the Springvale Streetscene depot site in Saltcoats.
