£50m redevelopment of Princes Street Debenhams recommended for approval
Councillors are expected to approve plans for the proposed £50 million redevelopment and refurbishment of the Debenhams store on Edinburgh’s Princes Street.
About this development:
- Authority:Edinburgh City
- Type:Commercial, Leisure
- Applications:
- Team:ICA Architects (architect)
Fund manager Legal & General, on behalf of the L&G UK Property Fund, submitted plans in December for the project which hopes to deliver a 210-bed hotel with a rooftop bar and city centre ‘hub’ with space for local businesses.
The director of planning recommended the council’s development management sub committee to approve the application at next week’s meeting on June 2.
The planning submission by ICA Architects follows an online pre-application consultation (PAC) during which Legal & General said it wants to restore and protect the heritage of the building for the long term. The plans will also contribute towards the council’s long-held ambitions to create a café culture on Edinburgh’s most famous street.
The hotel would be a four-star Marriott Tribute, the first of the brand in Scotland.
Nida Rehman, development manager for Legal & General, said: “We warmly welcome the views from the director of planning. We have worked closely with the council to ensure our proposals match its vision for the future of Princes Street as well as the needs of local people and visitors.
“A sensitive repurposing will provide future proofed, vibrant places while securing the heritage of these buildings These proposals will help bring people back into the centre of Edinburgh, not least to enjoy some of the best views in the city and the first class experiences the new public spaces will create.”
Debenhams entered administration for the second time in April this year and went into liquidation on December 1.
If the planning application is approved, it is hoped work can begin within a year, with completion n 2024.
