Additional cabins in play as Robertson plots June restart for £35m university project

Robertson Group is planning to resume work on Aberdeen University’s new £35 million science building next month with extra cabins to maintain social distancing.

The project, which is situated on the corner of St Machar Drive and Bedford Road, ground to a halt at the end of March when lockdown restrictions began.

In the hope work can start up again next month, the Evening Express reports that plans are now in place to utilise more cabins in the adjacent car park of the university’s zoology building to make sure that contractors remain safe from infection when on site.

The university’s assistant estates director, Alan Wight, discussed the potential progress during a digital meeting of Old Aberdeen Community Council this week.

Mr Wight said: “There has been a request for us to provide contractors with more space for cabins to allow more social distancing.

“We would like to offer them the south end of the zoology building car park.
“That would keep them as close as possible to the construction site, with space to spread out.”

Featuring cutting edge facilities and flexible teaching laboratory space, the new facility has been designed by Reiach and Hall Architects to encourage collaboration between students from different disciplines.

It is hoped it will transform the learning experience for thousands of students, and encourage school children to get involved in science subjects.
