Advance Construction implements new alcohol safety measures for plant drivers
Advance Construction Scotland has added to its range of safety devices and protocols by installing Alcolock devices to its plant vehicles.
Alcolock devices act as an ignition lock preventing the vehicle from starting should a driver have any alcohol in their system. The company has not faced any issues with drivers operating over the limit, and employees have welcomed this new preventative measure as a commitment to the safety of themselves and others on the road.
The groundwork and civil engineering company is one of the first companies in Scotland to roll out this ground-breaking measure.
The move comes as the Scottish Plant Owners Association (SPOA) highlighted drug and alcohol abuse as a major problem among plant operators and called on the Construction Leadership Council (CLC) to tackle the issue.
Fleet manager Colin Sinclair, who successfully won the ‘Scottish Fleet Manager of the Year’ title at the recent Transport News Scottish Awards ceremony, said: “We’re always looking for ways to make our operations safer and more responsible, and we’re delighted to be ahead of the curve in introducing Alcolock to our vehicles.
“We’ve sat down with our drivers to explain how the device works and the positives that it will bring, and we’ve had a fantastic response from both our employees and our clients.”
The Alcolock initiative is just one of the positive measures being introduced within Advance Construction Scotland. The company was also an early adopter in making the switch from traditional diesel fuel towards biofuel across its entire fleet, significantly improving its carbon footprint.
