AKP Scotland marks 35 years of stability and strength
Ian McEwan, chairman and founder of AKP Scotland, has proudly reflected on 35 remarkable years leading the award-winning principal contractor.
Originally established as the Andrew Kerr Partnership, the company’s roots trace back to Ian’s formative years in the construction industry. After honing his skills at John Laing (now Laing O’Rourke) and Glasgow-based Lafferty Construction, Ian gained valuable experience through freelance surveying, estimating, design, and project management in his early twenties. Combining this expertise, Ian embarked on a mission to redefine the industry with a Principal Contractor offering a more forward-thinking approach.
The business flourished quickly. Within three years, AKP achieved an impressive turnover of approximately £10 million, securing high-profile contracts, including a £9.5m complex project for Glasgow Royal Infirmary. This early success laid the foundation for the company’s enduring reputation.
Commenting on the milestone, Ian said: “The AKP ethos, Building Pride, reflects our passion for delivering construction projects to the highest standards. It’s always been about doing the job right and ensuring the best possible outcome. This commitment has consistently shone through over the last 35 years. I am incredibly proud of what the business has achieved and the contributions of every team member who have delivered our services to such a high standard. Looking at the projects we’ve completed and those currently underway, it’s evident how far we’ve come and the strength of our reputation in the industry today.
“Quality, cost and delivery performance are central to everything we do. Our customer first mindset underscores these values and has helped us forge strong and sustainable relationships with clients who share our ethos. This alignment is driving exciting new opportunities in the marketplace.”
Despite the challenges facing the construction industry, AKP said it is on track for a record turnover exceeding £30m in 2024/25. Over the past two years, AKP has successfully delivered several prestigious projects, including:
• Refurbishment of Marriott Hotels in Edinburgh and Glasgow.
• Preferred bidder status across Lots 1 & 2 of the University of Glasgow Framework.
• Construction of a new Distillery for Eden Mill at St Andrews.
• Conversion of Caledonian House in Dundee to Form Student Accommodation
• Multiple contracts at Maxim Business Park.
• Refurbishment of the landmark G1 Building in Glasgow
• Construction of the Yardworks Studio at SWG3
Ian added: “The Management Team thanks our people, clients, design teams, subcontractors, and suppliers for their unwavering support, which has been pivotal in our journey. We look forward to the next 35 years of growth and success.”
