A team from East Kilbride-based construction business akp Scotland is taking part in Scotland’s biggest charity fundraising challenge - the Forth Bridge Abseil - in memory of their former colleague who died earlier this year.

Neil Donnan, who spent four and a half years with akp Scotland as a quantity surveyor, passed away in January 2023 aged 42 after experiencing a heart attack and brain aneurysm. He leaves behind his wife Stephanie, and two children.

Although he had moved on in his career, Neil was still held in high regard by his former akp colleagues who were determined to undertake a challenge in his honour.

The five-strong team comprising John Black, Phil Mycek, Colin McCready, Connor McBride, and Roz Malcolm will abseil the Forth Road Bridge this October to raise funds for Scotland’s leading health charity, Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland.

Moira Murdoch, commercial director at akp Scotland, said: “Neil was such a happy and positive person to have around. Always ready with an amusing quip or funny story. A real morale booster, optimistic force and asset to the business and was very well-liked by all his friends and colleagues.

“He made an impression on all who met him, and it was evident to anyone who spent time with him how devoted he was to his wife and family.

“We were all so shocked when we heard that he had died and so we’re pleased to be able to raise some funds in his memory and for all those others in Scotland that have been affected by these illnesses.”

Louise Macleod, community events and fundraising manager at Chest, Heart & Stroke Scotland, said: “We are so grateful to the team at akp Scotland for choosing to take on this challenge and raise much needed funds in honour of their former colleague and friend, Neil. They are true fundraising heroes.

“All money raised for CHSS stays in Scotland, enabling us to support all those living with chest, heart and stroke conditions across the country to live their lives to the full.”
