And finally… £62k toilet revamp leaves council short-changed
A council was forced to delay the reopening of Victorian toilets - because urinals were four inches too high.
The problem was spotted after £62,000 was spent on the red brick facilities in Lower Market Place, Ilkeston, the Nottingham Post has reported.
They were opened but had to be shut again when the flat roof began to leak. A further inspection revealed that the three urinals had been fitted too high up the wall.
Dave Bramwell, head of green space and street scene at Erewash Borough Council, said: “The public toilets were given a complete refurbishment at the end of last year, but soon after the re-opening it was discovered there was a fault with the new roof covering.
“An inspection following the revamp also identified that the urinals had been fitted too high.
“As such, we did have to close the toilets again while work to rectify the issues was carried out. All this work has been undertaken at the contractor’s expense with no additional cost to the council.”
The council said that the urinals were lowered by 110mm.
Councillor John Frudd said: “They really should have measured things properly. The right height is very important, because some people are 5ft tall and others nearly 7ft, so it’s a case of one size fits all.
“I am not in the blame culture. Everyone can make a mistake but if they do it again it becomes an issue.”
