And finally… A slice of Paradise
Christie Howieson, who runs her own business Cake Days A Week, said the lifelike creation, which was ordered by a lady from Ayr for her husband’s 50th, took the best part of three days to make, the longest any of her cakes have taken yet.
She told The Scotsman: “You really feel like an architect because you need to consider scale and shape to make sure everything looks in proportion. I’m really happy with the detail though and how it all turned out.”
According to the young entrepreneur, when her customer came to pick up the resulting cake, she was “blown away” by the creation.
Christie works as an in-house graphic designer and has always had a passion for design – but admits that when approaching making her first ever cake she just “winged it”.
She added: “I had a friend ask me to make a small cake for her daughter as some had let her down – I had no idea what fondant was at the time! But I managed to get a mermaid looking cake to her and from there I just kept going.
“I’m fully self-taught so I’ve just gained confidence and technique as I’ve went along. I graduated from the Glasgow School of Art so I think having a creative/artistic background has really helped.”
Previously SCN has featured Ukrainian patisserie chef Dinara Kasko who drew on her background in architecture when cooking complex, geometric desserts as well as architect Tom Hetherington’s run as a contestant on Great British Bake Off.
