And finally… An offer you can’t refuse
An ancient Sicilian hamlet in Bivona, surrounded by peach and olive groves has joined the list of Italian towns fighting depopulation by selling houses for €1 each.
However, the mayor of the Hamlet has realised that offering dream homes for a tiny price no longer works in stimulating population growth in dwindling communities, as 16 other towns have implemented similar schemes.
Milko Cina has announced that in an attempt to beat the competition, “we have decided to throw in tax cuts as well”.
However, buyers of the homes who wish to benefit from tax cuts must register as residents of Bivona, The Times reports.
Only a 40-minute drive from beaches, Bivona is topped by a castle and a tranche of alleys dating from the Arab occupation a thousand years ago.
