And finally… built like a tank

And finally... built like a tank

A pre-World War II water tank is to be given a new lease of life as a luxury home.

Plans drawn up to convert the two-storey Catcraig Water Tank, on the outskirts of Dundonald, and make it fit for 21st century living were approved by South Ayrshire Council.

LMA Architects said the water tank, which is almost the same size as a football pitch, boasted “unique architectural character” which makes the structure “a building of particular merit” and “worthy of being protected.”

Under the designs, the building will boast three bedrooms, kitchen/ dining area, cloak room, living space and a garage on the lower floor. Glazing panels will also be introduced to help bring light into the structure.

A new access road would have to be reintroduced, too, as the original one has been reclaimed by nature.

In its planning statement, LMA Architects said: “The proposals do not seek to significantly change the appearance of the building, however the external fabric will have to have some concrete repairs.

“The proposal would be to carry out the necessary concrete repairs and then prepare the walls for a proprietary smooth insulated render system in a colour that would match the existing exposed concrete.”

The practice added: “We do consider that the unique architectural character of the building makes it a building of particular of merit and worthy of being protected and converting into an interesting and distinctive new home.”
