And finally… ‘keep the change, ya filthy animal!’
The iconic house featured in the 1990 classic Christmas film Home Alone has sold for $5.5 million (c. £4.5m) – $250,000 over asking price (c. £200,000).
Located in Winnetka, a suburb of Chicago, the five-bedroom, six-bathroom property was listed in May 2024 for $5.25m and quickly received an offer. The sale was confirmed as pending in December 2024, according to listing agents Dawn McKenna and Katie Moor of Coldwell Banker Realty.
Since the film’s debut, starring Macaulay Culkin as the resourceful Kevin McCallister, the house has become a popular landmark. While the red-brick exterior remains largely unchanged, the property has been extensively renovated since its construction in 1921. The previous owners, Tim and Trisha Johnson, who bought it in 2012 for $1.58m (c. £1.28m), carefully preserved the foyer staircase, living room, and dining room, all featured prominently in the film, Architectural Digest reports.
The house now boasts 9,126 square feet of living space, including a gourmet kitchen, a basement, an enclosed porch with a dual-sided fireplace, a gym, a seven-seat home cinema with a bar, an indoor sports court, two laundry rooms, and a heated three-car garage.
The listing agents said in a statement: “We’re thrilled with the way this home captured everyone’s attention and hearts due to its well-deserved place in cinematic history and the timeless holiday memories it evokes.”
The identity of the new owner remains undisclosed, but Mr Culkin previously admitted he considered buying the home to transform into a “movie fun house”.
