Colin Blevin went to work at Ciarra Construction in San Jose when he encountered a car blocking the entranceway. He approached the driver, Raymond Randy Gutierrez, and noticed a baby in the back seat.

“He moved the car and I pulled in,” Blevin told People. “The back door was cracked open and I saw a baby. I didn’t know what was going on. I didn’t know initially the baby was in danger and there was an Amber Alert.”

Blevin pulled in and that’s when he allegedly saw Gutierrez attempting to break into another car. At that time, a woman who lived in a nearby trailer quietly approached him and said that Gutierrez had tried to give her the baby. “I looked into the car and there is this beautiful chunky baby looking at me. The baby calm, clean, with a bottle on his chest. I thought, ‘What is going on here?’”

Gutierrez claimed that a lady had given him the car and left the baby in the back seat. Blevin found that strange, given the 44-year-old’s jittery behaviour and appearance. “I thought, ‘There is no way the baby belongs to this man. There is no way this man should be in charge of a baby.’”

At that point, Blevin grabbed the car seat and told the man he was not leaving with the baby, People reports. He called 911 as Gutierrez then fled. A few hours later, he was arrested on suspicion of vehicle theft, kidnapping, child endangerment and possession of stolen property.

According to authorities, the child’s real father had left him in the car outside his home at 5 a.m. When he went back in the house to get something, the car (and baby) were taken.

Blevin is still processing everything that happened. “I was able to help a little kid and his family and that is a life highlight right there.”
