A collection of ancient marble statues controversially held by the British Museum could have to be handed back to Greece as part of a Brexit trade deal.
The Parthenon Marbles, also known as the Elgin Marbles, have been in Britain for over 200 years despite repeated attempts to repatriate them to Greece.
Human rights lawyer Geoffrey Robertson is among those who have criticised the legal basis for the British Museum’s ownership of the statues.
The Greek government is now reportedly pushing for UK-EU trade negotiations to include the return of “unlawfully removed cultural objects to their countries of origin”, according to a leaked draft text.
A spokesperson for the British Museum insists the statues “were legally acquired”, The Times reports.
