And finally… Lunch Atop a Skyscraper recreated with original worker’s descendant
The iconic image depicting construction workers eating lunch on a girder suspended 840ft above New York has been recreated with one of the worker’s descendants.
One of the world’s most famous photographs, ‘Lunch Atop a Skyscraper’ features 11 workers sat side-by-side without safety harnesses high above Manhattan while building the Rockefeller Center.
Taken on September 20, 1932, the photo celebrates its 86th birthday this month.
Irish immigrant Sonny Glynn sits at the further right of the steel girder and his descendant George Glynn, 25, has now recreated the famous pose 450ft above London’s skyline.
“It’s the stuff of legend in my family, so I’m really excited to be recreating the original photo,” he told the Daily Mirror from the rooftop of a 32-storey building next to the Shard, before the girder is winched into the sky.
“My family have always had the photo hung up at home.”
George, who is from Galway and has lived in London for two years, perched in the same spot Sonny did nine decades ago.
While a number of archivists now claim the photo was a publicity stunt, George says it is irrelevant to its enduring legacy.
“I 100% believe that the photo was genuine, whether it was staged or not.
“The level of health and safety back then was nothing like it is now, so they really will have been risking their lives.
“My father worked in construction too and I think they just became immune to the threat of danger. When you’re used to it, the height doesn’t faze you in the same way.”

The recreation was organised by food delivery service Deliveroo to mark an uplift in the number of outdoor orders this summer.
The company invited members of the public via a free ballot to enjoy their breakfast in the sky following a 210% increase in orders for outdoor deliveries.
