And finally… Plans to convert Olympic landmark into Europe’s tallest slide

Buro Happold and bblur architecture have won planning approval to create Europe’s tallest and longest slide from the platforms of Anish Kapoor’s Orbit sculpture.

The landmark was nicknamed the helter skelter by the public when it was built at the Olympic park for the London 2012 Games.

The £1 million proposal will see a 178m slide created from the platforms of the structure down to ground level

Thrill seekers will hit speeds of 15mph during their descent, which is expected to last about 40 seconds per ride. It is anticipated that the slide will be installed by spring 2016.

The proposal is the brainchild of the London Legacy Development Corporation, which is also the planning authority, as a way of boosting visitor numbers to the Orbit which have been lower than anticipated.
