Infrastructure giant Robertson Group brought a new meaning to the phrase ‘family run’ as employees welcomed their children to the workplace last week.

Part of the global Take Your Child to Work Day initiative, 17 Robertson employees from a number of different divisions handed the reins over to their kids as they dipped their toes into the world of grown-up work for the first time.

Several of the Group’s construction businesses across the country took part, including Robertson Tayside, Robertson Central East, Robertson Central West and Robertson Partnership Homes, as well as Robertson Civil Engineering, Robertson Capital Projects and Robertson Homes.

Graeme Cameron, operations director at Roberson Facilities Management, welcomed his daughter Eve to Robertson House in Stirling. For Eve, highlights included helping out in the mailing room, where she was put to work opening 61 letters, commenting that she’d like to follow in her dad’s footsteps and become a boss at Robertson when she grows up.

Lucas Dickson spent the day with his dad Kevin, managing director of Robertson Tayside, where he visited developments including the new Bertha Park schools complex and Dundee Waterfront.

Lucas said: “When I grow up I want to be in the movie business – either acting, directing or behind the scenes. However, spending the day at my dad’s work did make me interested in construction for one of the first times ever!”

Robertson Civil Engineering construction manager Bob Gould’s son Aaron was met with a full itinerary of work, beginning the evening before with an asbestos awareness test – in which he scored an impressive 100%. Aaron enjoyed activities including a site tour of West Fife Depot, site engineering and surveying and a visit to Social Bite Village in Edinburgh, where Robertson Civil Engineering has just completed pro bono enabling works.

Gemma Gourlay, director of social sustainability for Robertson Group, said: “It was brilliant to welcome so many young, eager employees to our sites and offices across the country to give many their first taste of what’s to come beyond education. I’m sure the parents certainly learned a lesson or two as well!”
