Lawyers acting for indigenous Mayan groups have taken legal action seeking the removal of a 10-foot statue of Poseidon erected on a beach near Progreso, Yucatan.

The lawsuit alleges that Poseidon “is alien to our Maya culture” and that, if any statue is to be erected, it should be of the Mayan god of water, Chaac, Sky News reports.

Carlos Morales, leading the lawsuit, added that the process of erecting the statue “did not meet the requirements” under environmental legislation.

The statue has been temporarily closed by authorities.
