The proposed link running under the Little Minch would connect Benbecula with Skye, making the mainland a car trip away.

Rarnish on the east coast of Benbecula and Neist Point on Skye is the shortest direct distance between the two locations. The Western Isles Council discussed the plan last week and agreed to hold a seminar on the issue.

Those travelling from Benbecula to the mainland currently take a ferry from Lochmaddy on North Uist to Uig on Skye, a journey of 2 hours and 10 minutes, before heading for the Skye Bridge.

An alternative route goes from Lochboisdale on South Uist to Mallaig (3 hours 30 mins) or to Oban (5 hours 10 minutes).

A spokesman for the Western Isles Council said: “Members have expressed a wish to meet further and gather more information on the prospect of a tunnel and whether it should be pursued. The council would also wish to be informed about the community’s view and what the full implications of this construction would involve.”
