Environmental design, building services and lighting design consultancy Atelier Ten has appointed two new directors in Scotland.

Alan Maxwell has assumed the role of Scotland director, while Gordon Black takes on the position of director in Glasgow.

A Chartered Engineer and Fellow of both the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers and the Institute of Engineering and Technology, Alan Maxwell brings over 30 years of industry experience to his new role. As Scotland director, Alan will lead Atelier Ten’s Glasgow and Edinburgh offices.

With a collaborative approach and a passion for innovation, Alan will continue to foster the firm’s culture of excellence while keeping clients informed about the latest developments in legislation. His extensive experience spans private and public sector projects in commercial, residential, education, retail, industrial, and PBSA sectors, incorporating cutting-edge renewable technologies and low-carbon solutions.

Gordon Black also joins Atelier Ten with a wealth of experience in the building services sector. A Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers, Gordon has over 25 years of experience in the UK and Ireland, delivering technically complex and sustainable solutions across diverse sectors. Gordon will contribute to Atelier Ten’s continued success in the Scottish environmental engineering market, enhancing its portfolio of high-profile projects such as The Burrell Renaissance, Dunard Centre, and The National Centre for Music.

Atelier Ten said the appointments signal the next chapter in the growth of its Scottish operations. The move comes as Bill Ritchie, who established Atelier Ten’s operation across Scotland and Manchester, announces his decision to step back from an operational role. Bill will remain involved in a UK strategic capacity, offering guidance as the firm’s Scottish operations move forward under Alan and Gordon’s leadership.

“We are thrilled to welcome Alan and Gordon to their new roles,” said Bill Ritchie. “Both bring deep expertise and a shared commitment to sustainability and innovation. Their leadership will be instrumental as Atelier Ten continues to drive forward its vision of creating high-performance buildings that are both environmentally responsible and architecturally inspiring.”

Alan and Gordon will work closely with Duncan Campbell, Atelier Ten’s executive director, to take on the environmental challenges of the next decade while ensuring Atelier Ten continues to work on the most exciting, interesting and cutting-edge construction projects in the UK and beyond.
