Glasgow Science Centre is to embark on a £4.2 million transformation of the outdoor spaces around Pacific Quay to create learning spaces filled with hands-on exhibits, seating and sculptures along the Clyde.

Austin-Smith:Lord plans Glasgow Science Centre public realm improvements

A planning application has been submitted to Glasgow City Council for the public realm improvements associated with its Connect:Outer Space project, which aims to create inspiring, active public spaces that stimulate activity on the quaysides and improve connections between communities.

Designed by Austin-Smith:Lord, the project will enliven the science centre’s quaysides with:

  • Enhanced, inclusive active travel facilities and connections
  • Interactive, accessible and topical external exhibits showcasing science for all
  • Welcoming public spaces, activated day and night with events, lighting and green infrastructure.

Features of the project include transforming the quayside and canting basin to create a 24/7 Outdoor Science Centre with “attractive destinations along a waterside science promenade”.

It also plans to reimagine the space between the centre and the BBC building as a Science Square, creating a ‘front garden’ for both organisations showcasing science, culture and community events, while untangling the conflicting paths across the site to ensure pleasant, convenient and safe access for all.

The project is jointly funded by the Wellcome Trust’s £30m Inspiring Science Fund and Sustrans’ Places for Everyone.
