Ayrshire students introduced to careers in construction

The managing director of Persimmon West Scotland recently met with business students at Ayrshire College to discuss the wide variety of opportunities available in the housebuilding industry.

Chris Logan shone a light on the career pathways available across various departments, with opportunities ranging from traineeships and apprenticeships to graduate programs. Chris was also keen to bust some of the myths about the industry and highlighted Persimmon’s track record of nurturing talent to progress within the business – having started himself as a graduate planner before going on to become Managing Director of the home-builder’s West Scotland business.

During the visit, Chris announced the launch of two new trainee sales adviser roles – and hopes to recruit two Ayrshire locals to join the company. The trainee sales advisers will work on Persimmon developments in Ayrshire, where they will be supported through a training programme that will ultimately see them progress into permanent sales roles.

Chris Logan, managing director of Persimmon West Scotland, said: “I was delighted to visit Ayrshire College and meet with local students. The house building industry has a huge variety of exciting opportunities available and it was great to speak to students and staff about some of the career pathways that exist.

“As one of Ayrshire’s biggest homebuilders, our developments create a significant number of jobs and apprenticeship opportunities for local people and we’re proud to be supporting communities right across Ayrshire.”

Sandra Ferguson, curriculum manager for business, computing, travel and tourism and humanities, said: “We were delighted to welcome Chris and Scott to speak to our HN Business students about the Persimmon brand and the trainee sales adviser roles. Visits like these allow our students to see how the theory they have learned in class can be applied in the business environment.

“The students found the presentation interesting, having no previous knowledge of the housebuilding industry, and were impressed at how the business operates. They also enjoyed hearing about Chris’ career journey, finding it motivational and inspiring, particularly as they could relate to someone who comes from Ayrshire.”

Ayrshire College is Persimmon’s largest education partner in Scotland. Earlier this year, the college hosted Cabinet Secretary for Education, Jenny Gilruth MSP, to mark Persimmon’s 50,000th brick donation to colleges across Scotland.
