Barratt Developments and Wheatley take top honours at Homes for Scotland awards
The Scottish home building sector’s top honours for this year have been revealed, with Barratt and David Wilson Homes awarded Home Builder of the Year and Wheatley Group awarded RSL of the Year by trade body Homes for Scotland (HFS).
Announced virtually for the first time, with the programme for 2020 and 2021 amalgamated owing to last year’s lockdown, this is the 18th year that the HFS awards have taken place with the objective of recognising best practice and raising standards across the sector.
HFS chief executive Nicola Barclay said: “Given the challenges of the last 18 months, it really is testament to the resilience of those delivering the much-needed homes of all tenures that are required and the esteem in which our awards are held that we have been able to go ahead at all.
“The HFS awards are renowned for their rigorous judging process which means making it to the shortlist is a major achievement in itself. Thanks to the commitment of our independent judging panel in undertaking site visits and interviews in dramatically different circumstances right across the country, we have been able to ensure the same high standards.
“I am therefore delighted for all our finalists, not only this year’s ultimate winners.”
Home Builder of the Year
With a commendation for Barratt and David Wilson Homes for the Heritage Grange site in Edinburgh and its West division taking top spot for Riverside in Glasgow, judges were also impressed by Barratt’s clear and comprehensive management presentation – particularly the company’s ethos and approach to the environment and innovation. All of this, together with a commitment to keeping its workforce safe on site during the Covid-19 pandemic, meant that judges have no hesitation in granting the company the top accolade of Homes for Scotland Home Builder of the Year.
Doug McLeod, regional managing director for Barratt Developments in Scotland, said: “I am filled with pride and admiration for our hard-working team at Barratt and David Wilson Homes, who are truly deserving of the success achieved at the Homes for Scotland Awards.
“The commitment from the entire team is unrivalled, which is why we strive to set the standard within our industry, and I’m so pleased to see such recognition from the guardians of Scotland’s homebuilding industry.”
The latest awards add to a string of recent success for Barratt and David Wilson Homes, including Housebuilder of the Year and the Community Contribution Award at the Scottish Home Awards, as well as the top national award for site manager Shaun Quinn at the National House Building Council (NHBC) Pride in the Job Awards.
RSL of the Year
Picking up two category awards, the judges praised Wheatley for its diversity of product and for the way in which it tackled difficult renovation projects in derelict buildings, giving communities a new purpose and quality of life. Its training courses and charitable work also stood out to the panel. With a clear passion for housing delivery and the creation of sustainable communities clearly shining through, the judging panel are pleased to award Wheatley Group the RSL of the Year award.
Elsewhere, Campion Homes won a Judges Special Merit award on behalf of the Gannochy Trust.
With a design brief based on the inspiration of founder A K Bell, Campion Homes constructed each property in line with the Trust’s vision to provide affordable homes that improve health, accessibility and connectedness for tenants.
A spokesperson said: “Campion Homes were delighted to collaborate with the Trust in the creation of this stunning development and we would like to thank and congratulate all our team involved in this project.
“As a family-owned company, Campion Homes are committed to a high standard of quality in every home constructed and we feel incredibly proud to have won this prestigious award.”
