Bellway helps light up Newmains community

The lights shone brightly on Newmains Christmas tree at this year’s festive switch-on thanks to the help of Bellway Homes West Division’s construction team.

The community had struggled in recent years to raise funds to have a Christmas tree on display at the Newmains roundabout in the heart of the village near Wishaw.

This year the Community Council purchased a living tree to avoid the spiralling costs and as a trial for future years.  However, for the tree to be correctly positioned ground works were required on the roundabout.

Construction director Andy Borland heard about the dilemma and arranged with Advance Construction to supply a dedicated team to remove existing hardstanding and excavate trenches to enable supply cables for the lights to be installed and then finally reinstating the ground.

Councillor Robert John McKendrick, North Lanarkshire Council, said: “Every year a tree was purchased from North Lanarkshire Council and was then discarded.

“As well as being more environmentally friendly, the new site will allow children to get up close to the tree and a full event of a Christmas market can be achieved. We can now have the local nursery children there to sing carols in a safe environment.

“A few weeks ago, the situation became desperate as we could not get the work finished for the planned switch on date. Thanks to you and your team we are now set up for this year and future years.”

Andy Borland, construction director, Bellway Homes Ltd (Scotland West), added: “We were delighted to lend a hand and are looking forward to seeing the children and the wider community enjoy the tree.”
