Queen to open Borders Railway

The Borders Railway will be officially opened by Her Majesty The Queen on the day that she becomes Britain’s longest serving monarch.

Several days of celebrations will be held to mark the start of services on the line in September, kicking off with a Golden Ticket day of community events for those who have served the railway, both old and new, throughout its history.

And the centrepiece of the festival will be a Royal opening on Wednesday, September 9, where the Queen will be joined by first minister Nicola Sturgeon to take an historic steam journey along the route with celebrations at either end.

The news comes with just a month to go until the new railway opens, on time and on budget. It is the longest domestic railway to be built in the UK in over 100 years.

Over 200 homes planned for Arbroath

Plans have been announced for a new residential development in Arbroath.

The developer intends to hold a public meeting to inspect plans and discuss proposals with representatives.

Green light for 100 new homes in Fife

A multi-million-pound residential development on 13 hectares of agricultural land near Cairneyhill has been given planning permission.

More than 200 letters of objection were lodged against the proposal, largely due to flooding concerns.

Fife Council approved the construction of around 100 new homes north and east of the west Fife village with council officers assuring that a flood attenuation scheme will make flooding less likely.

In 2012 a flood caused major disruption, with waist-deep water damaging homes and putting the school playing area out of use for several months.

However, the council’s west planning committee granted planning consent in principle to Avant Homes for the houses which will be accessed off Pitdinnie Road.

Councillors were advised that drainage and flooding experts had concluded the development would not, in principle, add to the flood risk and that flood attenuation measures planned would benefit the village.

They were also told that further information would be required on drainage and flooding before detailed planning consent is issued.

The application was approved by five votes to four.
