• New water treatment works operational in Oban

Its completion means that more than 12,000 customers in the Oban area will continue to enjoy clear, fresh drinking water for years to come.

The Oban Tullich WTW supply zone reaches as far north of the town as Port Appin and as far south as the islands of Seil and Luing, and includes the areas of Connel and Benderloch in between.

Demand in the area increases during the summer months when the population can more than double due to the number of tourists.

The new WTW is located on land adjacent to the old WTW which will now be demolished.

• Work starts on Glasgow public realm scheme
  

Work has started on a £750,000 public realm improvement project within Central Govan.

The work will be funded by the Glasgow City Region City Deal and Govan Cross Townscape Heritage Initiative.

Through the work, the public realm will be enhanced at and around the entrance to the Govan Old church and adjacent to the Pearce Institute and Govan War Memorial, as well as on Pearce Lane, Burleigh Street and Langlands Road connecting to Langlands Path. Both Govan Old and the Pearce Institute are Category A listed buildings.

The improvements to the public realm will link to the forthcoming Govan - Partick bridge, and will be a key link in the proposed active travel network running between Byres Road and the University of Glasgow over to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital.

The links underline Govan’s place at the centre of the proposed Waterfront and West End Innovation District, and this work is the first City Deal funded project to be delivered in Govan.

The work will also play a key role in protecting and promoting the heritage of the area, marking the first stage of exciting development proposals that will safeguard the future of the Govan Old church, improving access, enhancing visitor numbers and attracting businesses.

The work is expected to be completed in May 2019.

• Dundee shopping centre cinema plans collapse

Plans to build an eight-screen cinema complex at the Wellgate in Dundee have been pulled after talks between shopping centre bosses and an independent cinema firm collapsed.

A cinema for the Wellgate appears to be off the agenda after talks between Orchard Street Management and The Light Cinemas stalled

The planning application for the cinema lapsed last year and no further application has been submitted by Wellgate owner Orchard Street Investment Management.

Other venues will be considered

• Work on new sports pitch in East Renfrewshire complete

Work on a new sports pitch and running track has been completed at the old Barrhead High site on Aurs Road, East Renfrewshire.

The synthetic 11-a-side pitch will provide a hub for sport and recreation and benefit both Barrhead High pupils and a range of local sports clubs in the community.

The new facility will be used by pupils across all year groups during PE lessons, as well as for extra-curricular activities.

The old Barrhead High was in use for almost half a century before being replaced by a new £30 million campus next to the old school last year. The site of the former school now also provides car parking and has relocated the stake park.
