- New park and ride taking shape in Cambuslang
Work is progressing well on a new park and ride facility to encourage sustainable travel in Cambuslang.
The development is taking shape on derelict land opposite Cambuslang Train Station, adjacent to Bridge Street.
More than 250 new parking spaces, including new electric vehicle charging infrastructure, will be provided.
Funding for the project for entire project has now been confirmed from Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and works are expected to conclude by the end of the summer.
Once open, access to the Park and Ride facility will be via a new dedicated right turn lane from Bridge Street.
While the majority of the works on site will not impact on the existing roads infrastructure there will be some traffic management required to allow for the safe construction of the right turn lane.
The development is being funded in partnership with Strathclyde Partnership for Transport and South Lanarkshire Council.
- North Ayrshire Council completes Connell Court sheltered housing refurbishment
North Ayrshire Council has completed major improvement works at Connell Court, Kilbirnie, marking the culmination of the latest project to deliver modern, accessible homes for older residents.
The finishing touches were completed recently, breathing new life into the refurbished sheltered housing complex.
The £2.114 million works – supported by a Scottish Government grant of £969,000 – have brought extensive improvements to the properties which are designed to specifically meet the needs of older residents.
The most recent Housing Revenue Account budget, approved by the council in December last year, includes £25m further investment in the council’s Sheltered Housing Re-provisioning Programme. This provides the opportunity to refurbish the remaining sheltered units in the housing portfolio which have not yet been upgraded, over a five-year period.
In addition to its commitment to sheltered housing, the council will also deliver hundreds of new council homes this year at sites including Flatt Road in Largs, St Beya Gardens in Cumbrae, Brathwic Terrace on Arran, Towerlands in Irvine, and Springvale in Saltcoats. Other developments currently under construction include St Michael’s Wynd in Kilwinning, Dalrymple Place in Irvine and Irvine Harbourside.
- Aberdeen hotel demolition plans to be consulted on
The future of the site of a former Aberdeen hotel is the subject of a public consultation to take place next month.
Demolition of the Hilton Treetops in Springfield Road began at the end of last year, with developers silent about what was to be built in its place.
Now Malcolm Allan Housebuilders has indicated plans could soon be submitted with the council to build 95 homes on the 6.75-acre plot.
The Kintore construction firm, working with consultants Halliday Fraser Munro, has submitted a proposal of application notice (POAN) with the local authority – an initial signal of intent before launching an application for a “major development”.
Several developers were understood to be eyeing up the hotel and the land on which it sat after its sudden closure last February.
Malcolm Allan Housebuilders said it is committed to meeting the council’s 25% affordable housing requirement on the site.

- Investing to improve at the heart of Cambuslang
Cambuslang Town Centre is set for an £845,000 makeover with work due to start later this month.
The streetscape project will see a range of works on the south side of Cambuslang Main Street between Greenlees Road and West Coats Road.
Improvements will include resurfacing of paving with natural stone, new street furniture, and the creation of a community event space at the centre of Main Street. The project is due for completion by the end of this summer.
Cambuslang Community Council is funding the project with the support of the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Fund and the Scottish Government’s Town Centre Capital Grants Fund. South Lanarkshire Council will project manage the works in consultation with Cambuslang Community Council.
Contractors Covanburn successfully tendered for the contract to carry out the work in Cambuslang.
- Improvements planned for Stewartfield Way in East Kilbride
Updated plans to improve a key part of East Kilbride’s transport network have been given the green light.
The plans suggest significant upgrading work could begin on Stewartfield Way next year, with completion targeted in 2025, dependent on further stages of approval and planning consents being obtained.
In addition to dualling of the section between the James Hamilton Heritage Park and Kingsgate, the plans include a cycle route running the entire length of the road, plus new pedestrian crossings and enhancements to the bus infrastructure.
The plans were part of an updated Strategic Business Case that was approved by South Lanarkshire Council’s Executive Committee on Wednesday.
Plans to improve Stewartfield Way were modified after the public consultation exercise at the end of 2019 saw 2,000 people attend public events and 1,555 take part remotely, including an online survey.
The revised plans suggest work could be implemented in phases between 2022 and 2025, with an estimated 200 jobs expected to be created during construction, while an assessment suggests the project
will support up to 300 permanent employment opportunities.
The Stewartfield Way project is one of four in South Lanarkshire as part of the Glasgow City Region City Deal. The Strategic Business Case notes that it will help increase economic growth and connectivity.
The Strategic Business Case will now go forward to the City Deal cabinet on 1 June for consideration and approval, before an Outline Business Case would be brought forward, followed by planning consents and other approvals being sought.
