CMS eco house schools initiativeCMS gives students taste of working world

CMS Window Systems has demonstrated its commitment to promoting local employment and building the skill sets of younger generations by giving students a taste of what it is like to work for the business.

Throughout April, the designer, manufacturer and installer of energy-efficient windows, doors and curtain walling systems played host to the Primary 7 classes of six feeder primary schools for Our Lady’s High School in Cumbernauld. The educational activity days, around the theme of social, environmental and economic sustainability, were part of a P7 transition project between the high school and its feeder primaries.

Eleven-year-olds from the six schools spent time at CMS’s flagship Innovation Hub in Castlecary to learn about current issues in sustainable housebuilding, before putting their new knowledge to use by designing their own eco-houses. All six primary schools will visit Our Lady’s High School on Tuesday 21st June to present their Eco House of the future models.

CMS ran the scheme as part of the Scottish Government’s ‘Developing Scotland’s Young Workforce’ initiative which aims to establish a stronger connection between education and the world of work.

Having recorded 12 months of consecutive double-digit decreases, Aberdeen hotels achieved an occupancy rate of 62.6 per cent in April which was down by only 2.5 per cent on last year.

But the ongoing challenges faced by the sector in the city were highlighted by a fall of 26.8 per cent in average room rates over the past year to £67.74.

Kirkwall link road officially opens

The new link road built in Kirkwall was marked with an official road opening ceremony yesterday.

Works for the new road, called Foreland Road, began last September. The £1.7 million scheme was completed by local company Andrew Sinclair – Contractors and Plant Hirers.

It is a little over 600 metres in length and will link the New Scapa Road and Old Scapa Road.

The link road provides access points for the island’s new hospital and healthcare facilities and will reduce the impact on the surrounding roads.

The scheme includes a new roundabout at the junction of Foreland Road, New Scapa Road and the Holm Branch Road. In addition, pedestrian and cyclist access along the road has been incorporated with a significant level of planting and comprehensive drainage work to help blend the area into the local environment and encourage wildlife.

Carluke paving and landscaping materials manufacturers Marshalls are helping two local construction students to lay the foundations for their careers in the building trades.

Dale Ritchie (19), and Scot Jackson (20) – both from Carluke - are half way through six weeks’ work experience with Marshalls as part of New College Lanarkshire’s annual industrial placements for Construction Pre Apprentices.

The students are being given a variety of tasks to do at Marshalls’ manufacturing site in Carluke, where the company - formerly known as Paver Systems until purchased by UK-wide business Marshalls plc in 2005 - has been based for more than 20 years. Nearly 50 staff are based at the Carluke site, which supplies to a range of customers including housebuilders CALA Homes as well as a large number of builder’s merchants throughout Scotland.

The College’s student placement programme aims to showcase the youngsters’ skills to potential employers and this year involves around 50 students - the largest figure to be sent for work experience since the College’s Construction Pre Apprentice course was launched 10 years ago.
