Rothesay Pavilion refurbishment progressing well

Work on the £14 million refurbishment of Rothesay Pavilion is ramping up, with the building on track for a 2019 opening.

Progress is being made on construction of a new main roof for the building, while internally main contractor CBC has installed elements of the new café and the Pavilion’s new ground floor exhibition space. Also on the ground floor, the new club and venue areas are being created.

Full details on progress at the site will be presented to the Argyll and Bute Council’s Bute and Cowal area committee this month.

The removal of non-load bearing internal walls is also taking place, allowing for the new internal design to begin to take shape. Feature columns in the main hall are being protected as they will be incorporated into the new design at the Grade A-listed building.

The new facility is expected to employ over 30 people and attract over 70,000 visits per year. It will be operated by the Rothesay Pavilion Charity, who will lease it from the council on an ongoing basis.

Roads across West Dunbartonshire improved after budget funding increase

Councillor Iain McLaren and Councillor Marie McNair at the A813 junction with Bonhill Bridge where a new dedicated southbound lane will be introduced

Extensive improvements to key road routes in West Dunbartonshire have been completed as part of a £10 million budget investment.

Councillors dedicated additional funding to the network during their budget setting in March.

Since then, West Dunbartonshire Council’s roads team has upgraded the A813, A811, and Mountblow Road, Clydebank.

The improvements on the A813 between Bonhill and Balloch saw 1.7km of carriageway resurfaced, as well as a new drainage system, new drains and new pipes installed.

A further phase of works which will introduce a dedicated south bound lane at the road’s junction with Bonhill Bridge is planned for later this year.

On the A811 Balloch to Gartocharn route, 4.9km of carriageway has been resurfaced with a final section within the village expected to be complete before the end of this week.

The work also replaced 500 metres of drainage and completed reconstruction work in required areas of the road.

Mountblow Road in Clydebank – between Lilac Avenue and Perth Crescent - has also been upgraded, with works completed this week.

The works follow the council’s decision to significantly invest additional funding in the network as part of the budget setting in March.

Roads teams are now set to begin planned resurfacing work on the A82 at North Drumry, with work beginning on September 30 for 10 nights.

Notification of works will be displayed at key points in the affected areas.

Still Game actor gives Cube high-rise the seal of approval

Tenant William O’Brien, Cube’s George Thomson, tenant Robert Dickson and Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Colin Hegarty join actor Paul Riley at Collina Street

Still Game actor Paul Riley has given a Cube Housing Association high-rise in Glasgow the ultimate seal of approval.

Paul, who plays bunnet-wearing Winston Ingram, helped Cube tenants celebrate a five-star review of Collina Street from Keep Scotland Beautiful’s expert environmental assessors.

Cube Housing Association, along with the other partners in Wheatley Group, is working closely with Keep Scotland Beautiful to keep communities clean and green. And Collina Street in Maryhill – which doubles as Osprey Heights in the BBC show – rated highly for cleanliness inside and out, excellent waste collection and recycling, and good communication between staff and tenants.

Paul took time out from filming the next series of Still Game to meet tenants and staff and help mark the result from Keep Scotland Beautiful.

Keep Scotland Beautiful has its own National Award for Environmental Excellence and has been working with staff and tenants to assess and grade Cube neighbourhoods.

It looks at things like foyers and closes, back courts and open spaces – as well as issues such as graffiti and dog-fouling – and grade a community three, four or five-star.

Collina Street was built in 1967. It is 18 storeys high and contains 112 flats, a mix of one and two-bedroom homes.

Christmas charity partnership gives older persons’ groups the festive factor

Simon Cocker, corporate partnerships and legacies manager at Age Scotland; Stacey Kitzinger, events and community fundraiser at Age Scotland; Alec Cassidy, finance director at Ross and Liddell; and Irene Devenny, managing director at Ross and Liddell

Property management company Ross and Liddell is partnering with Age Scotland to deliver a special Christmas gift to older people across the country.

The firm has linked up with the charity to launch a new 12 Days of Christmas campaign to provide 12 older persons’ groups with funding for festive events.

The scheme is open to Age Scotland member organisations across Glasgow and Edinburgh with groups being invited to apply for a grant of up to £500 to cover a range of festive activities.

The money could be used for room hire and refreshments, speakers and entertainers, transport to and from outings, tickets for pantomimes and Christmas gifts.

To be in with a chance of securing funding, groups will have to demonstrate how they tackle loneliness and isolation within their communities, and how they benefit a wide range of older people.
