Bovis profits crumble amid customer compensations
Profits at Bovis Homes have fallen by almost a third after the housebuilder was stung by costs relating to customer complaints over the quality of its homes.
The company saw pre-tax profits for the six months to 30 June plummet 31% to £42.7 million, with the firm also booking exceptional advisory costs linked to defending itself from two aborted takeover attempts from rivals Galliford Try and Redrow.
The group, which focuses its activities on England and Wales, has so far set aside £10.5m to cover remedial work and compensation for affected customers after it was dogged by complaints over homes that were sold unfinished and had electrical and plumbing faults.
Revenue for the period rose 4% to £427.8m, with the average price of the firm’s homes rising 9% to £277,400.
But completions fell 6% to 1,512 following a pledge to slow the rate at which it builds homes in 2017 as part of a “re-set” under new boss Greg Fitzgerald.
Bovis is aiming to build 4,000 homes per year, lower than previous targets of 5,000 to 6,000.

Removal of pedestrian footbridge in Nairn
Work has commenced this week on the Bailey bridge over the River Nairn adjacent to the Harbour, which gives pedestrian access between the harbour and the holiday park.
This bridge was closed to traffic several years ago and pedestrians crossing the river now walk on the main part of the structure. The footpath extension, on the upstream elevation of the bridge, is closed and has been out of use for some considerable time.
The works underway comprise of the removal of the out of use parts of footpath extension which forms a separate attachment to the main bridge. Its removal will not affect pedestrian usage as there will be no change to the main structure.
The redundant footpath components can be re-used and are suitable for installation on a similar structure in Lower Foyers where they will be fitted to provide safe pedestrian crossing.
Milestone reached at Barlanark affordable housing project
The installation of the first timber superstructures marks an important milestone in the construction of a new mid-market rent development at Burnmouth Road in Barlarnark, as work progresses at pace.
Located to the east of Glasgow city centre, close to Garrowhill train station and Edinburgh Road, the 43-home project is being constructed by CCG (Scotland) Ltd for Glasgow Housing Association (GHA) and will be let and managed by Lowther Homes, both of which part of Wheatley Group.
CCG commenced works in May of this year and within a 12 week period the company has completed the installation of the timber superstructures to five of the eight blocks of housing thanks to the use of the CCG iQ enhanced closed panel timber system.
Designed and manufactured off-site in their Cambuslang facility, CCG OSM, the system is delivered to site complete with pre-installed insulation, service zones, windows and doors, ensuring quality and rapid speed of construction as well as offering excellent thermal efficiency properties.
The Bell Street project is being delivered for GHA and the Craigmillar homes for Dunedin Canmore. When completed, both developments will also be let and managed by Lowther Homes.
As part of Wheatley Group and CCG’s in-depth approach to community benefit, a number of initiatives will be delivered as a direct result of the project. Opportunities will be provided for new entrants across all site-based roles as well as work placements for people from the local community.
Also, as a direct result of this project, four of the 22 trade apprentices that joined the CCG Group this August as part of the company’s annual trade apprentice intake, will be based at the site for the first of their four-year apprenticeship programme across bricklaying and plumbing trades.
Burnmouth Road is due for completion in summer-2018.
