Burntisland welcomes new active travel route

A new active travel route has opened in Burntisland linking Glebe Place, Kerr Court and Cowdenbeath Road (A909).

The 500m path will help to encourage active travel in the community, particularly to Burntisland Primary School.

The route was officially opened on Tuesday 13th June by Provost Jim Leishman, councillors, community council members and Burntisland Primary School students in a celebratory ceremony.

The new path was initially requested by Burntisland Community Council, who identified the path was in poor condition. Fife Council worked closely with representatives from the community council to deliver the upgraded route.

Providing a new route for walking, wheeling and cycling, the path will be a safer alternative to the main routes that pass Burntisland Primary School, such as the A921 and B923.

The existing path has been upgraded and widened to 3 metres to better accommodate people walking, wheeling and cycling. New lighting and improved signage have also been installed.

Alongside upgrades to the existing path, a new path linking Kerr Court car park to Cowdenbeath Road has been developed, which will provide a drop off area and a ‘park and stride’ option for students and parents.

The new route will help community members travel in an active manner to locations such as the community centre, play park and Burntisland Amateur Football Club.

These improvements follow several new active travel routes being opened in the area such as:

  • Burntisland to Kinghorn Active Travel Route (2021)
  • Burntisland Links Active Travel Corridor (2022)

Councillor Altany Craik, Fife Council spokesperson for finance, economy and strategic planning, said: “The improvements being made to the active travel infrastructure in Burntisland are an excellent example of our dedication to creating thriving places in Fife.

“By increasing the options for those who walk, wheel and cycle in our communities, we are promoting wellbeing and making sure that everyone has access to the services and facilities they need, regardless of their chosen method of travel.”

Councillor Ian Cameron, convenor of the Kirkcaldy Area Committee, said: “The new path linking Glebe Place and Kirkcaldy Road will better enable Burntisland community members to travel in an active and safe way.

“By widening the path, and improving lighting and signage, our Active Travel team have created a route that community members can be proud of, and that provides a safer and more attractive alternative for people to walk, wheel and cycle.

“The improvements to active travel routes in Fife also demonstrate our commitment to reducing carbon emissions and addressing the climate emergency by encouraging our communities to embrace active and eco-friendly travel.”
