Cabinet secretary marks milestone at Bishopton and Dargavel’s new healthcare facility

Fleming welcomed cabinet secretary for health and social care Neil Gray to ‘top out’ Bishopton and Dargavel’s new healthcare facility earlier this month.

Part of the Dargavel Village development, this modern healthcare facility represents a significant investment in partnership with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), and Hub West Scotland. The new facility will complement the existing health centre in Bishopton, which was refurbished by Fleming in 2022, ensuring high-quality care for the community.

Fleming’s managing director, Mike Burrows, said: “We are proud to play a key role in delivering this much-needed healthcare facility. Having been involved in the project from the design stage, it’s hugely rewarding to see the building taking shape and to witness the benefits it will bring to the community. Sustainability has been a major focus for this project, aligning with our expertise in delivering highly efficient buildings.”

Designed with long-term sustainability in mind, the building incorporates hybrid-passive design standards, featuring triple glazing, enhanced insulation, natural ventilation strategies, and optimised solar gain.

In addition, significant efforts were made to minimise embodied carbon to 550kgCO2e/m2 with the use of structural timber having a key part in this.

Neil Gray, cabinet secretary for health and social care, said: “I am pleased to see this facility being developed to support the long-term needs of the community. Ensuring a sustainable, patient-centred health service is vital, and this project demonstrates the positive impact of collaboration between NHSGGC, Renfrewshire HSCP, and Hub West Scotland.”

Beyond sustainability, the project has delivered significant community benefits, with a strong focus on employment and skills development. Fleming has actively engaged with local apprentices, providing training and career development opportunities in the construction industry. More than £2.4 million has been spent with Scottish SMEs, supporting local businesses and strengthening the regional economy.

Set for completion this summer, the new healthcare facility will include five consulting rooms, a treatment room, four multiuse spaces, and a dedicated community room, ensuring flexibility for a range of health and social care services. The project is part of BAE Systems’ wider investment in Dargavel Village, with a £1m financial contribution and land donation supporting its development.
