Cala Homes partners with Edinburgh College of Art to create artworks for Newington Residences
Homebuilder Cala Homes (East) has worked in collaboration with Edinburgh College of Art (ECA) to create 22 bespoke pieces of art which will be unveiled within the stunning entrance hallway of their Clocktower apartments at Newington Residences.
Cala has worked with ECA to create a brief which will allow the students to pick out key elements of Newington Residences, to create contemporary artwork which will then go on display in the main hallway at the development at a special gallery event which will be held next month.
A judging panel comprising Cala and ECA employees will select the winning artworks based on their creativity and finish, as well as the inspiration behind each creation – whether it’s a connection to the history, feature or architecture of this 1800s building, or an association to the wider local area.
The artwork will then be unveiled at a ‘gallery’ event within the hallway of the Clocktower apartments at Newington Residences, at which the chosen college artists will have the opportunity to discuss the inspirations and visions behind their creations with invited guests.
Located in popular Newington, less than three miles from the city centre, the impressive new development comprises a modern reimagining of the former Royal Blind School and its attractive grounds. This beautiful refurbishment includes 21 spacious contemporary apartments situated within the historic 1800s school building itself complemented by a mix of three, four and five-bedroom townhouses.
Phillip Hogg, sales and marketing director for Cala Homes (East), said: “The Clocktower apartments hold so much history and are in such a wonderful location, meaning there is so much inspiration available.
“The Victorian architecture and panoramic views from many apartments – which take in many iconic sights of Edinburgh – are just some of the reasons they are so special. We can’t wait to see what these talented students choose as the focus of their artwork, and to see them bring that to life through creativity.”
Set within the attractive grounds of the former school building, Newington Residences offers sophisticated seclusion in one of Edinburgh’s most sought-after postcodes. Surrounded by mature trees, this development offers tranquil living on the edge of the city and has been brought to life by its outstanding showhome.
David Moore at ECA, added: “We are delighted to offer this opportunity to our students, to engage with an outside project within the city. It also gives us pleasure to contribute to the legacy of the Edinburgh Royal Blind School at their former location in Newington and to have our students work permanently located there through the generosity of Cala Homes (East).”
